The nÓg Session

Join with the Tír na nÓg Irish session players as we host an open, Irish-style session every Sunday starting at 3:00 PM. All musicians, singers, instruments, dancers, and listeners are welcome. Bring us your favorite tunes and songs to share or play along with ours. We mostly play Irish-style songs and tunes (jigs, reels, etc.), but also welcome offerings or suggestions from other musical genres.

Anyone wishing to lead or start a song or tune for the group has the opportunity to do so. We encourage musicians of all abilitites to join in with us and ask only that all participants be respectful of the group as a whole relative to melody, lyric lines, and volume.

The music is a living tradition and is an integral part of Irish-style pub life and social gatherings. While we love the traditional styles and tunes as handed down by the master players, our focus is on fun and enjoyment for participants and listeners. (This is not to say that playing the traditional way and fun are mutually exclusive.)

Annie and the staff at TNN are great folks and very supportive of our group. It's a wonderful thing to play music in the traditional atmosphere such as they provide.

The end of an era (as of June 1, 2009)

Thanks to all who have made our session a great success for over 2 years! Players come and go, life gets in the way, and things just naturally evolve or demand change. After experimenting with teaching tunes at the session and striving to make the session as "traditional" as possible, the time has come to change to an open session format.

I thank all of you wonderful musicians for your participation and interest in what I tried to offer. We learned many good tunes together. And, of course, great thanks to Annie; none of this would have happened nor continue to happen without her. Some of my fondest memories are the times when we were asked to perform at the pub. We sometimes had over 10 musicians on stage, sounding like a darn good ceili band! Your enthusiasm and abilities amazed me! But perhaps best of all, the session was a fun social gathering. I met so many delightful people, each with their own unique musical gifts, and I will miss you. I hope to share tunes and craic with you again.

P.S. Although I no longer lead the session, I may offer music classes or workshops in the future at the pub, but they won't be held during the Sunday session time slot. If you have an interest in such classes and workshops, let me know.
